Conversation Groups

Conversation Groups bring groups of newcomers together to practise their English to improve their language skills and gain confidence. An English-speaking volunteer leads each group and facilitates the conversation time.

Primary Responsibilities

Meet weekly with the group to practise everyday English conversations
Provide informal feedback and support as newcomers work on their vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversation skills

Time Commitment

Meeting times are flexible, depending on volunteer and newcomer availability
Meet once a week
1-2 hours per meeting
6 week or 12 week session

Orientation, Training, and Support

Volunteer orientation sessions will include program information and address language learning basics, learnings styles, culture shock, etc.
Volunteer toolkits include materials, resources, and conversation activities

Requirements

A valid and current Criminal Record Check and a Child Abuse Registry form must be submitted prior to engaging with newcomers
Knowledge of the local community and Canadian culture an asset
If English is not your first language, CLB 6 or higher is required
Keep private information confidential
