HIPPY Home Visitor Position
Regional Connections is a local non-profit organization with offices in Morden, Winkler, Altona and Dauphin. Our core programs for newcomers and Canadians, include settlement, employment, community connections, cultural diversity workshops, and language training.
Program Summary and Job Overview:
HIPPY is a unique program that provides Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY).
The program provides support for vulnerable and isolated moms in their role as their child's first and
most important teacher. Parents are provided weekly learning material that will help prepare children
ages 3-5 for school.
The HIPPY Home Visitor is warm and friendly and is able to connect with parents from a variety of
backgrounds. They enjoy working with families with young children and are able to work well both
independently and as part of a team. This job requires someone who is flexible, compassionate,
energetic, and has a desire to learn and grow in their skills and knowledge.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Schedule and attend home visits with each client on a weekly basis
- Visit participating parents for the purpose of modelling relationship building activities that
parents can do with their child(ren) - Participate in the planning and execution of group meetings, including role-playing the current
week’s activities and the implementation of an enrichment activity - Participate in ongoing professional development training and other staff development
activities, as designated by the HIPPY Coordinator - Assist in the recruitment of families to the program
- Timely completion and submission of required reports and other documentation
- Participate in all HIPPY sponsored activities (field trips, child graduation, group
meetings/conversation groups) - Provide support, coaching, and teaching for new Home Visitors as required
- Promotion of Regional Connections other programs and services
- The HIPPY home visitor position is a 10-month term position that can be renewed annually (for
a 3 year maximum) in which Home Visitors have the opportunity to participate in personal
growth and professional development activities along with the responsibilities of the Home
Visitor position - Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Lives in Dauphin or surrounding area
- Can read, write and speak in the English Language (CLB 5 or 6)
- Likes to work with others, especially with children and adults
- Is creative and excited about trying new things
- Includes others in activities and likes to work in a team
- Enjoys being with groups of people
- Can work with computers
- Can speak in a second language
- Is comfortable going into clients homes for home visits
- Flexible, patient and interested in helping others
- Someone who has been part of the HIPPY and/or an active student in Regional Connections
English classes preferred - Some knowledge of the Canadian school system preferred
- Has shown emotional maturity and sensitivity to the needs and interests of others
- Can work flexible hours
- Can legally work in Canada
Terms of Employment:
- Working Hours: 25 hours per week
- 40 weeks/year, during the months of September – June
- Rate of Pay: $17.68/hour
- Criminal Record Check Clearance with Vulnerable Sector
- Child Abuse Registry Check Clearance
- Driver’s licence (class 5) and a reliable personal vehicle – mileage is paid
- The candidate must be available to schedule Home Visit appointments from Monday to Friday primarily between the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm but some evening appointments may be required.

Position: Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) Worker
Reports to: SWIS Coordinator

- Status: Full-time
- Primary Working Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
- Hours Per week: 35 (17.5 hrs in Gimli/17.5 hrs in Arborg)
- Wage range: $20.86-21.69/hour, depending on experience/education

Program Summary:
The main objective of the SWIS program is to assist newcomer children, youth and their families to integrate into their school and community by providing information, settlement services and referral to community supports.
Position Summary:
The SWIS worker will provide settlement services in Arborg and Gimli to be a support for newcomer students and families in the surrounding area. Under the direction of the SWIS Coordinator, provide information and referrals through intake assessment and provide individual and group support to newcomer children, youth and families accessing the Kindergarten to Grade 12 school system to ensure their integration in the school and community. We are seeking a passionate and experienced individual who will work closely with young people to provide guidance, support, and encouragement as they navigate various challenges and opportunities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with children, counseling or youth development, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct needs assessments for newcomer children and youth to identify immediate, intermediate and long-term settlement needs
- Provide short-term settlement-related support to newcomer youth and their families
- Participate in the school reception and orientation process
- Provide newcomer families and youth with settlement information and referrals to community services and educational resources based on their specific needs
- Complete required data entry, monitoring, and reporting activities in a timely manner
- Meet regularly with school stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and ensure appropriate service delivery
- Promote community engagement; plan and coordinate activities with the purpose of building connections between newcomer students and their Canadian counterparts
- Plan, organize, lead and/or refer/connect newcomer youth to after-school activities to promote extracurricular involvement, social connections, civic engagement, and volunteerism (e.g., homework clubs, sports and recreation, spring and summer camps, and service projects)
- Participate actively in all mandated training, staff meetings, and workshops
- Operate in accordance with policies, guidelines, and protocols of service and partner organizations
- Collaborate with other team members to assess participant needs and track progress
- Maintain up-to-date client, service, and mentorship records and ensure the accuracy and confidentiality of client information
- Assist the SWIS Coordinator in annual event planning and monthly reports
- Lead team meetings and provide team support when SWIS Coordinator is absent
- Complex case management and support, referrals to case management when needed
- Mentor of new SWIS personnel after initial training until probation is passed (i.e., data entry checks to reduce errors)
Qualifications:
- Education and work/lived expertise will be taken into consideration
- A post-secondary certificate or degree in peer mentorship or social work preferred. Consideration will also be given to applicants with post-secondary education in other related fields (e.g. Education)
- Previous experience mentoring/counseling youth preferred
- Ability to effectively communicate and connect with elementary and middle school students
- Knowledge and experience in settlement and adaptation issues including personal experience with immigration and refugees an asset
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
- Knowledge of the Arborg and Gimli area, provincial education system, and community resources
- Ability to network, liaise, and collaborate in a team approach to service delivery
- Ability to nurture an inclusive and supportive team environment
- Ability to establish rapport with young people from diverse backgrounds
- Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment
- Ability to deliver group presentations, workshops, and other group activities
- Good time management and organizational skills for scheduling, task management, and data entry
- Strong leadership, assessment, and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge and experience in using a computer and associated programs – Windows, SharePoint, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
- Experience with social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
- Ability to communicate in a second language an asset
- Ability to shift/flex hours when evening work is required
